It’s a weird one this month. We have 15 food establishments out of compliance with the Chester County Health Department for March including two McDonald’s, five downtown favorites, several Amish Market stands, Highland Orchards, and a local elementary school. We also have a gas station with a questionable bathroom situation and holding onto the Dunkin’ supplies circa 2022, moldy strawberries, and some hot dogs that should probably be tossed.

Here’s your full rundown:

BP, 1594 West Chester Pike, out, 4 violations, including a bathroom with no paper towels or toilet paper and visibly dirty floors and walls. They were also told to remove the Dunkin’ Donuts equipment from, best I can tell, 2022. Probably time to let it go.

H&L Grill, Westtown Amish Market, 1165 Wilmington Pk, out, 9 violations including using cloths to cover the sub rolls; stored soups that were not datemarked; others that were not reheated to the correct temperature; and an ice machine, fryer baskets, freezer, ceilings, and a portable fan in need of cleaning.

Fisher’s Salad, Westtown Amish Market, 1165 Wilmington Pk, out, 6 violations including employee beverages in the food prep area, “Keep refrigerated” pickles left out for easy access in the unrefrigerated self-service area, a floor drain that needs cleaning, and spatulas and other utensils in disrepair. “Replace,” the report states simply.

McDonald’s, 927 S. High St., out, 4 violations including an iced coffee pitcher, sprayer sink, ice scoop, and plastic beverage cup and lid dispenser in need of cleaning and sanitizing.

The Stone Tavern, 1227 West Chester Pike, out, 8 violations including an employee garnishing water beverages with lemons with bare hands, the glass door refrigerator not keeping items cold enough, all items were discarded; and the dishwasher, mounted kitchen prep fan, and floors throughout in need of cleaning.

Artillery Brewing Company, 333 Granite Alley, out, 10 violations including employees changing tasks without washing their hand; pitas left out without a covering; ready-to-eat foods stored for more than 24 hours without a date indicating when they were made; and the inside of the microwave, the interior of the refrigerator, kitchen and brewery floors all visibly dirty. Also, multiple unauthorized bait traps and insecticide sprays were found throughout the facility.

Barnaby’s, 15 S. High St., out, 9 violations including a bar area cooler not keeping contents cold enough. Juices stored in the unit were voluntarily discarded. Ice machines on the third and bottom floors were observed to have food residue inside. The ice was removed and the units cleaned.

Penn’s Table, 100 W. Gay St., out, 7 violations including raw turkey stored next to raw beef without a barrier in between, ready-to-eat foods stored for more than 24 hours without a date marking, a knife rack with visible food residue, and an ice machine with rust buildup.

Spence Cafe, 131 N. High St., out, 6 violations including scoops being stored in the bulk food containers (This is not allowed. They must be kept separate when not in use.). Ready-to-eat foods stored for more than 24 hours without a date marking, floors in need of cleaning, and several utensils stored clean with food buildup on them. “Inspect utensils prior to moving from air drying to storage,” the report reads.

High Street Cafe, 322 S. High St., out, 8 violations including chicken stored above beef and beef stored above shellfish. The freezer was reordered during the inspection. Food in the walk-in cooler was not covered, storage containers were not labeled, and ready-to-eat foods were stored for more than 24 hours without a date indicating when they were made. Also, the interior of the ice machine and the can opener were visibly dirty. Both were cleaned during the inspection.

Hershey’s Mill Golf Club, 401 Chandler Dr, out, 17 violations, including moldy strawberries, several containers of expired house-made sauces, containers of tomato sauce and chicken soup not appropriately cooled. Also, foods stored uncovered in the freezer and two insect control devices were found in the back prep area. Where, according to the report, they have the “potential to contaminate food, equipment, and/or utensils.” Also, the tabletop can opener blade and the soda gun nozzle needed cleaning and sanitizing.

McDonald’s, 701 E. Gay St., out, 1 violation. Floors under the ice tea prep station and soda box storage area need to be cleaned and regrouted.

Highland Orchards, 1000 Marshallton Thorndale Rd., out, 7 violations including pre-packaged baked goods being sold from an unauthorized Maryland vendor, missing food thermometers, and a few required repairs.

Starkweather Elementary School, 1060 Wilmington Pk, out, 2 violations including a bathroom sink with no hot water and employee coats hanging next to the food.

Sunoco, 1425 Paoli Pike, out, 4 violations including ready-to-eat hot dogs and sandwiches kept longer than 24 hours without a date indicating when they were put out, and the hot dog tongs not being cleaned regularly.

On a happier note, the following places from last month’s report are back in compliance and ready to serve – The Tomato Shack, Teca, Starbucks, Stove & Tap, Lukoil, Santino’s Tap & Table, Jitter’s, Lorenzo and Sons Pizza, Ryan’s Pub, Oriental Pearl, AJ’s Pizza, Shoprite, and the West Chester Diner.
