New this year: West Chester University food service
Each year, Chester County Health Inspectors visit every restaurant or food-serving entity in the county, checking for compliance with public health and safety codes. I compile these findings into the monthly West Chester Restaurant Inspection Reports. In August, 11 institutions did not live up to these codes. Plus, new this year, I have reports from the West Chester University dining halls.
West Chester Restaurant Inspection Report
Glendale Dining Services at Pocopson Home, 1695 Lenape Rd., out, 15 violations, including the reach-in fridge in the dining area not keeping food cold enough, the egg salad and vanilla pudding in the kitchen cooler kept beyond their use-by dates, and the sauerkraut had no date at all. All items were discarded during the inspection, and the self-serve unit was ordered repaired. There was also a litany of cleaning tasks such as the cookline equipment, slicer prep area, floors under the equipment, floors and tables in the coffee area, and the hand sink in the dining room.
So Sabroso, 105 Westtown Rd., out, 4 violations, including slices of cake and beverages in the self-service refrigerator without proper labels, no consumer advisory against eating undercooked meat and eggs, and a damaged rear door. ”Rear door to alley has gaps and rust damage, which risk vector entry,” the report reads.
Ya Ya Chinese Restaurant, 22 E Street Rd., out, 12 violations, including a residential refrigerator/freezer combo in use, raw animal products stored above ready-to-eat foods in the walk-in refrigerator, food contact surfaces such as knives, plates, and cutting boards not being cleaned frequently enough, and fruit flies around the register area. “Clean area and have a certified pest control operator service and continue services if needed until flies are eliminated,” inspectors advised.
Square Bar, 250 E. Chestnut St., out, 6 violations, including Guinness onions and sauerkraut kept longer than seven days, diluted cleaning and sanitizing solution, and the beer walk-in cooler and the exhaust fan in the women’s bathroom in need of cleaning. This was a follow-up inspection.
Saxby’s Coffee, 701 S. High St., out, 4 violations, including no hand soap at the handwash sink, cold brew bags in the splash zone of the three-bay sink, and floors in the back prep area, ceilings everywhere, ice bin cabinets, and Vitamix blender all in need of a good cleaning.
DP Dough, 7 W. Gay St., out, 6 violations, including squeeze bottles in use and unlabeled, single-service plastic cups stored in the bathroom (ick, hope these were not intended for use), mold in the tube leading to the sanitizer dispenser, and the ceilings—lights, tiles, vents—and the back-of-house food prep area in need of cleaning. This was a follow-up inspection.
Barnaby’s, 15 S. High St., out, 6 violations, including one ice machine with a residue on the interior, another near the mop sink had visible debris in the ice, the bottom of the draft line near the dance bar was visibly dirty as were the soda gun holsters, raw shrimp stored over ready-to-eat foods, and flies at the bar—probably not the barflies they were looking for. This was a follow-up inspection.
