14 West Chester Restaurants Fail Their Health Inspections in July

Restaurant health reports show 14 West Chester restaurants were out of compliance for July including Pietro's Prime steak house seen above

West Chester establishments were feeling the heat from health inspectors over restaurant health reports last month, as 14 institutions were out of compliance with the Chester County Health Department for July. Violations ranged from the singular (QVC’s employee cafe has a malfunctioning cooler) to the excessive (Asuka Sushi racked up 22 violations) to the disturbing (mouse droppings on the measuring spoons?!). Also, 50 packages of expired lunch meat were out for sale, and one more reason to skip Barnaby’s Manhattan Clam Chowder in July.

Restaurant Health Reports: July

Asuka, 1502 West Chester Pike, out, 22 violations, including employees changing tasks without washing their hands in between, employee medication found in the food prep area, a can opener left on the floor, cooked pork and chicken put away without a date, and oil and equipment stored under a prep table where chicken was being prepared, risking contamination. The oil was discarded and all surfaces cleaned and sanitized. Also in need of cleaning is the exterior of all cooking equipment, all floors and walls, dish racks, dishwasher, light shields, and the smoker.

Kinder Care, 400 Skies Blvd., out, 9 violations, including water temps not getting hot enough, floors and shelves in need of cleaning, ants all over the syrup bottles, and mouse droppings found in the measuring spoons and along the edges of the floor. Both the syrup bottle and the measuring spoons were discarded. Pest control was called. In addition, the inspectors left the following recommendations: “Keep all foods tightly covered. Maintain all exterior doors closed and tight-fitting in the frames. Conduct a thorough cleaning of the kitchen.” May I also suggest sending in lunch for a while?

Brickette Lounge, 1339 Pottstown Pike, out, 11 violations, including raw meats stored above ready-to-eat foods in the cooler, no paper towels at the hand wash sinks, floor tiles missing in the bar area, a leak in the sprayer at the food prep sink, and another in the drain line next to the “shower” in the basement. (There’s a shower in the basement of the Brickette Lounge? Anyway . . .) Also, the bar needs a deep clean—literal bar flies were spotted—and so do the floors, walls, under the ice machine, and the tabletop can opener, which was reported to be visibly dirty.

1365 Cafe Brock, 1365 Enterprise Dr., out, 1 violation. Foods in the two-door cooler were held at 48–50℉ rather than 41℉ as required. Operators were ordered not to use the unit until it has been repaired.

Barnaby’s, 15 S. High St., out, 16 violations, including raw shrimp, beef, and eggs stored above ready-to-eat foods in the kitchen, ready-to-eat foods stored without dates indicating when they were made, coolers not keeping drink garnishes cool enough, clean equipment stacked wet, and sliced cheeses, Manhattan clam chowder, cooked mushrooms, and cooked mixed vegetables all kept past their expiration dates. Also, all soda gun nozzles, drains, and most ice machine interiors were observed to have some sort of residue on them and required a good scrub.
